Nanako Kono 幸野菜々子
Nanako Kono was born in 1999 in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2016. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis on painting, drawing, and printmaking, along with a minor in art history, at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2022. In 2025, she earned her Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Nanako creates paintings that explore miscommunication through a comics-inspired visual language, incorporating drawn elements, print media, sewing, and collage. Influenced by comic strips, she uses recurring characters, rectangular panels, and speech balloons as visual devices. Her experience learning English as a second language deepened her interest in linguistics and semiotics, raising questions about how meaning shifts between signs, symbols, and interpretation. By treating speech balloons as physical objects within her compositions, she highlights intention, motivation, and misunderstanding. Through flat color blocks and layered textures, her work examines the unstable surface of language and the tensions embedded in human interaction.
1999年東京生まれ。2016年秋にアメリカ・ラスベガスへ移住し、2022年にネバダ大学ラスベガス校にて絵画・ドローイング・版画を専攻し、学士号を取得。美術史を副専攻。
2025年、シカゴ美術館附属美術大学（School of the Art Institute of Chicago）大学院にて絵画・ドローイング学科の修士号を取得。漫画やコミックスの表現方法に影響を受け、パネルや吹き出し、キャラクターといった要素を取り入れ、「誤解」や「すれ違い」をテーマとした絵画を制作している。第二言語として英語を学ぶ中で、言語が必ずしも意図通りに伝わらないという経験から、記号論・言語学・コミュニケーションの不完全さに強い関心を抱くようになった。作品内では吹き出しを物質的なオブジェクトとして扱い、意図や感情のズレを視覚化。平面の中にフラットな色面とテクスチャを重ね、言語やサインのもつ表層性と、その奥に潜む複雑な意味のずれを探求している。
